Lawn Care Tips for Homeowners

How’s your lawn looking?

On a dry day, walk around your lawn to check for signs of damage caused by winter weather. Look for:

  • Bare patches that may need reseeding.
  • Water pooling that could indicate poor drainage.
  • Compacted soil from heavy snow or foot traffic.
  • Signs of pests or fungal diseases, such as discoloured grass or mould.

Noting and addressing these issues now will save time and effort when spring arrives. Leaving you with a gorgeous green lawn ready to use when the weather warms up.

Garden clear up
Now’s the time to remove leaves, sticks and other fallen debris that may have gathered over winter. A clean lawn allows sunlight, air, and nutrients to reach the soil, fostering healthy turf growth. It also looks neater and nicer, building anticipation for spring.

Avoid walking on your lawn

If January and February bring extremely cold weather, your turf may still be dormant. This means it is particularly susceptible to damage from heavy footfall and pet traffic. Encourage family members and four-legged friends to stay off the lawn as much as possible.

Check your soil for spring fertilising

While February is typically too early to fertilise turf, it’s an excellent time to test your soil. Knowing its pH and nutrient levels will help you choose the right fertiliser. If the soil pH is off, consider applying lime or sulphur to adjust it now, as these amendments take time to take effect.

Check your gardening tools

Take advantage of the slower season to clean and sharpen your mower blades and other lawn care tools. Sharp blades make cleaner cuts, reducing stress on grass and promoting faster recovery.

Lawn Care Tips for Landscapers

  1. Aeration planning

Although aeration is best performed in the growing season, February is a good time to assess which of your clients’ lawns may need it. Make a note of compacted lawns and schedule aeration services for early spring.

  1. Weed control

While the gardener’s away, weeds come out to play! Inspect your lawns’ surface and edges for rogue weeds and winter infestations. Apply weed killer towards the end of February to rid existing weeds and help stunt growth in the spring. Remember to check the weather forecast, as rain will wash away your efforts and deliver ineffective results.

  1. Check the weather forecast

February can bring a mix of bright blue skies, strong winds and sudden downpours. Monitoring the forecast will help you plan your landscaping jobs. During or after heavy rain, you’ll want to avoid working on sodden lawns as you could damage the grass – save your lawn landscaping for a dry, sunny day.

  1. Inspect your irrigation systems

Test your irrigation systems and check for any damage caused by freezing temperatures or storm damage over winter. Look for cracks in pipes or sprinkler heads and address any issues before the systems are needed in warmer weather.

  1. Catch up with clients

We recommend using February to touch base with clients about their goals for the upcoming season. Offer suggestions for enhancing their lawns, such as overseeding, applying topsoil or switching to more resilient turf varieties.

  1. Promote lawn maintenance

Educate your clients on the importance of lawn care and preventative measures, such as dethatching and aeration. Not only will this showcase your expertise, but it’ll also help explain how small actions now can lead to better results in the spring and summer months.

Thinking of Laying New Turf in February?

And so you should! February is a great time to lay a new lawn. After rain, the ground is often softer and easier to dig/rotate in preparation for turf rolls. It’ll also hold quite a bit of moisture to help hydrate new turf. Check out our Can You Lay Turf in February blog for extra guidance.
