After working in the landscaping industry for eleven years, Charlie Sterrett decided to take the plunge in 2022 and set up on his own to start CJS Landscapes & Design. From the age of seventeen he has worked in the trade sector starting with his first role in his dad’s building business. It was during the last five years however that he truly discovered his skill and passion for landscaping and now runs a highly successful business covering Harpenden and the surrounding areas.
This Harpenden project involved a complete garden transformation for a client that had several different sections of garden needing a total overhaul and re-design including bespoke, custom-made aspects.
After digging out over 40 tonnes of earth from heavy clay-based soil, Charlie and his team then had the task of removing this and bringing in the same amount of new soil to level the area and provide the right base to create different areas to the garden.
A retaining wall and steps leading up to French doors were built using London weathered yellow bricks and blue and black granite paving was created underneath a hand-built pergola. An outside seating area using larch posts and softwood was installed alongside raised sleeper beds to surround the garden.
The client requested a 45% angled recess back bench cut into the wall which was created using bespoke Iroko wood – all of which were made and installed on site.
At the bottom of the garden a chill out space and wildlife pond was created from nothing and featured a pebble beach area.
Finally, a 57-metre lawn was laid using Trident Turf from George Davies Turf and larch posts installed featuring climbers.
Charlie has always used George Davies Turf and finds their customer service really good, he said, “All the guys have been great and helpful and the turf has been the best I’ve ever had. George came to look at one of my projects recently and I found him very down to earth and professional, it was nice to have a chat with someone likeminded.”
