Buying and laying new turf during winter

December 08, 2022      Winter Tips

As Christmas draws closer and our to-do lists become longer than Santa’s, buying new turf for your garden or landscaping project might not seem like a priority. However, the winter season is actually a prime time for buying, ordering and relaying turf. This article explains the benefits of why you should buy turf in the winter and how you can invest now, for a fantastic looking spring garden next year.

WHY BUY TURF IN WINTER?

There’s a common misconception that turf should only be laid on warm, dry days. We’ve said it before, but as long as your soil is fully prepared, and not saturated or frozen, turf or any landscaping products can be laid throughout the year. But winter, in particular, brings with it lots of benefits for your new turf, such as:

  • Winter weather keeps your lawn hydrated
  • If it’s raining, it’ll save you time and money on watering
  • Your turf has time to settle into its new location
  • It has a chance to establish a strong root system before the dry, summer months
  • It experiences less footfall
  • Rolls of turf can be left longer if needed
  • It requires less mowing

TIPS FOR LAYING NEW TURF IN WINTER

If you’re planning of laying new turf during the next few months, there are a few steps to consider in order to get the most from your product:

  • Prepare the soil – if it’s frozen, wait until it’s thawed
  • Wear warm and appropriate clothing
  • Use laying boards to prevent dips and uneven areas
  • If it’s not raining, water your new turf daily
  • Avoid walking on it, especially when it’s frosty
  • Don’t let snow pile up – it can cause grey snow mould (typhula blight) which is a sticky, cold weather disease appearing where snow has melted.

A NEW LAWN ISN’T JUST FOR CHRISTMAS!

The best advantage of buying and laying new turf within the winter months is you’re making a great investment into your garden or landscaping project. By laying your gorgeous green grass now, you’re giving it time to establish itself and grow a deep root system that’ll help keep your lawn hydrated during those hot summer spells, which we seem to be seeing more and more of.

HOW TO LOOK AFTER NEW TURF THROUGHOUT WINTER

If you’ve recently rolled out your new lawn and the full force of winter suddenly hits, don’t worry! Frost or heavy snow won’t cause any long-term damage if you follow our winter turf tips:

  • Keep off the grass during frost – you’ll leave footprints and damage the grass blades
  • Remove prolonged, compacted snow
  • Build snowmen on paths or patios
  • Don’t mow your new lawn
  • Avoid applying any fertilisers or weed killers

ADDING NEW TURF TO YOUR CHRISTMAS LIST
