Meet our Team

George started up his company back in 2001, never envisaging the scale to which it would grow. Having achieved so much developing and growing his business, George’s role is now very different. Over the past nine years he has assembled the team we list below, freeing him up to work on the strategy to drive sales for the business, development of the team, marketing, and technological innovations that have benefitted operations within the company. George still takes responsibility for sourcing the best available turf on the market, and has excellent industry relationships all over the country.

With decades of experience and a sharp focus on service, Gareth joined GDT to strengthen our sales team and raise the bar on customer care. He’s been instrumental in helping us ensure every customer gets exactly what they need & when they need it. Behind the scenes, he’s helped streamline our processes, making things smoother and more efficient across the business. But it’s his passion for people and service that really stands out. He's always looking for ways to improve, support the team, and make life easier for our customers and employees. Outside of work, he’s big on travel, with Prague, Barbados, and Budapest as firm favourites and Japan still to tick off the list. He’s also a loyal England cricket supporter (having played for 35 years!), a committed F1 fan (Team Lando and Alonso), and a casual but committed golfer. And when there’s a new wine to try or learn about, he’s all in.

Big Dave is the longest serving team member at GDT joining at a time when the tea and coffee round was a lot smaller – he was the start of the team in a way. He has done everything within the business throughout his GDT career from picking orders, and handwriting invoices (yes, he really is that old…) and dealing with our ever-growing customer base developing key relationships with suppliers and clients alike. He took over the planning and logistics system when George went on a holiday and never gave it back. He has developed it from pencil, paper and abacus system capable of handling 800k rolls of turf a year, to a state of the art bespoke computer program that can service 1.5m rolls plus. Dave’s dry sense of humour make him a firm favourite with the team and suppliers, and his ability to consume tea by the bucket is legendary at Tetley. His deep sense of commitment and ownership and communication skills make him the rock of GDT.

Brenten joined during peak season and made an instant impact. Calm, focused, and full of ideas, he’s helped sharpen the sales process while improving how we support our customers. When he’s not supporting the team or upgrading our systems with smarter tech, you’ll find him paddle boarding and in nature, his way of resetting before another busy week. A real asset to the team.

Julie came into the business and immediately implemented controls and accountability, she has bought order and organisation. Working closely with George, Julie always has headline data available and has contributed massively to improvements in this area of the business. Julie is also responsible for software integration with the SAGE accounting platform she uses. As well as her own role, Julie has offered a huge amount of support to the sales team and has often covered a sales role as well as her own job. Julie’s sense of fun definitely breaks the mould for the accounts department.

Darren kicked things off at GDT in St Albans, where he made light work of heavy collections and kept deliveries running like clockwork. These days, he’s based at Head Office as our Marketing Manager and resident tech guy. Whether he’s analysing data with George, fine-tuning our marketing strategy, or leading a website revamp, Darren’s the one making sure everything runs smarter and smoother. He’s the brains behind our digital push and if something needs a fresh idea or a tech fix, you can bet Darren’s already on it.

Joanna joined the sales team with no experience of telephone sales, but her desire to succeed and her bubbly personality shone through and she was able to win over the customers. Since then, she has progressed to take control of the yard in Olney, bringing efficiency and organisation to collections. Now working in planning and logistics Joanna is getting to grips with a new planning system. Joanna is very popular with customers and her peers; she loves to look after the team and provides breakfast for them every Friday morning.

Jamie arrived with experience of the landscape industry, but ready for a new challenge. Holding his class one license Jamie began by trunking turf from the turf farms back to our depots. He then grew into a role delivering to our customers on a rigid lorry. Jamie has now mastered a role within the office supporting the sales team. His flexibility and skill sets have made him a most valued member of the team, always willing to fit into the business wherever required. Recently promoted to St Albans branch manager Calvin has big boots to fill, but don’t worry about that. Born in Durban the BFG was reared on a diet of red meat and the gym. Forged from granite he is the perfect guy to head up the stone operation in our St Albans branch. Away from work he embraces the great outdoors and loves the sun (he should be alright for that one week in June we get in this country).  A keen sports fan Calvin has won medals and awards for swimming and rugby. He loves his family time and shooting a few hoops with mates. Definitely off his table is salad and uncertainty, but you can be sure he will offer you a huge welcome in St Albans.

The oracle of all things driving at GDT. Waldemar began working in the Olney yard, breaking down turf and loading Lorries. Waldemar has set the bar for all GDT drivers, with his preparation for deliveries, customer service and ability to overcome problems when put under pressure. He has never been heard to say no when asked to take on more work. So highly thought of is Waldemar that he is often requested for deliveries by regular customers. Kristina has become a really important part of the team here at GDT. She keeps our finances in great shape, supports the planning and reporting, and helps turn the numbers into clear decisions that keep the business moving forward. She has settled in brilliantly and brings a calm, focused approach to everything she does. Outside of work she loves spending time with her family, getting outdoors for walks and keeping herself improving. She is also studying for her ACCA which tells you everything about her attitude and drive. And something she should be very proud of is losing 25 kilos in six months after becoming a mum. That takes real determination and she brings that same mindset into her role every day.

Sam joined GDT at a very challenging time, with the on-set of Covid his driver qualification was made very difficult due to the lack of available tests. He then began driving during our busiest ever spring, but testament to Sam he survived and has grown into the role. Sam comes from a landscaping background and maybe it is this that helps him understand how to deliver great service out on site. Sam has received great customer reviews on his service. Dawn arrived at the beginning of the year, searching for a new challenge. Well reporting to Freddie, challenged she will be! Dawn has settled in quickly and has been a trainer's dream and soon endeared herself to the primary consumer of tea when she declared she also adds the milk first! Dawn will be bringing energy and enthusiasm and call on a wealth of customer service experience to help her build some great customer relationships. Dawn said she was attracted by the prospect of the grass being greener well at least she's in the right industry. Dawn will fit in really well with the team!  

Say hello to Jack Biddle, the youngest member of the George Davies Turf & Stone team! Despite hating cold weather, he’s always outside helping our drivers and getting stuck into the action. Jack is full of energy, eager to learn, and proactive in mastering the industry. A big Liverpool FC fan, Jack loves talking about football. Especially because most of the team supports Arsenal or Man United! Safe to say, he’s been enjoying the conversations lately. When he’s not at work, you’ll find him at the gym, watching football, or at the pub. Watch this space—Jack’s just getting started! 🚀

Nicolle is one of two new signings in the January Transfer Window for the 2023 season. Bought in for her experience in customer service rather than her EXCELLENT taste in football teams (she's a Gooner). Nicolle joins as a beneficiary of a more forward thinking and flexible approach to recruitment at GDT, and will in fact be in the office for only three days a week, (although we will still get our 5 days worth out of her). Nicolle has settled in quickly, and once up to speed promises to provide a 5* service. Arriving with a wealth of experience in customer service and a winners mentality, she will be a great addition to the GDT team!

ATTENTION, our latest recruit joins up with over nine years of military service. Serving with the Royal Artillery, Pete was on three tours including an early visit to the Gulf. Watch out because he is more than capable of lighting the touch paper having worked with the rocket launchers. Happy with a different role these days, Pete’s eyes are still firmly set on service, he will be using his twenty years of driving experience to deliver the quality service expected by our customers and all at GDT. Pete’s a big rugby supporter, not so much SAS as SSA (Saracens Supporters Association), George will be looking for a quick turnover and a conversion to the Saints.

Jo has joined the GDT team for 2024 to bolster the customer service and sales teams. She brings with her a wealth of experience in office administration and she’s already settled in nicely having come from an adjacent industry. Jo is always smiling and this warmth and confidence is even evident down the phone when talking to you. Her role will be very customer focused and she describes herself as often finding herself in the right place at the right time. This was very apparent as the first thing she learned was the tea/coffee round for the team – what a star! Jo has a 15 year old son and enjoys yoga to relax. So you can fully expect her to be handing out mini yoga lessons on the lawn once she is settled in, one of her targets will be to see if she can teach Freddie how to touch his toes. We at GDT expect great things from her and we can’t wait to see her journey with us, and we hope you love working with her as much as we do.

Tom joined the team in May and uses the journey to and from work to live out his wishes to emulate Valentino Rossi on his motor bike, however first he needs to master staying on his bike. Living in Bedford naturally he supports Man United, although to be fair he does get to games when he manages to get a ticket. Tom has a huge respect for birds of prey, so now the big question is will he fight or fly in his quest for survival in the GD tea making round. His early impressions of the office are that “the team are fantastic and this is a great place to work, where there is room to grow and improve yourself” It is great to have Tom ride pillion with GD!

Laurence joined the George Davies Turf & Stone team, bringing with him a wealth of experience in operating the HIAB Lorry. He quickly mastered the controls and progressed to driving our "Big Boy Lorries," showcasing his extensive driving skills and dedication. Laurence has not only excelled in his role but also delivered exceptional customer service, ensuring every interaction is a positive one.

Away from the roads, Laurence is an avid sports enthusiast. He is a passionate supporter of Liverpool Football Club and the England cricket team. In his quieter moments, he enjoys bird watching, appreciating the beauty of nature.

Matt joined GDTS in the spring of 2025, just in time for our busiest ever season, he took straight to the work and has been a great fit with the team. A big sports fan, Matt enjoys football, rugby and golf, a Spurs supporter his blushes were spared slightly with the European success at the end of the season, but strangely enough he didn’t mention the Premiership. Matt is a family man who likes nothing more than a dog walk that finishes at a pub, but whatever you do, don’t serve a glass of white wine accompanied with a “Bounty Bar”, white wine and coconut are a big no for Matt. A stickler for punctuality, let’s hope he brings that to his lorry, great to have Matt on the team.

Known as “Bully Boy” not for his aggressive nature but for his love of throwing arrows. Adam has had great success in the County darts leagues of Bedford and Northampton. We are hoping he will be will be “TOPS” with his deliveries. Away from work Adam likes nothing more than the peace of the river bank for a spot of fishing but if the fish in the river don’t bite there is always his garden pond, well stocked with carp, whatever he catches, I bet it is “THE BIG FISH” He is also known for playing the occasional set on his guitar. Damian’s the guy you want on your side when you’re planning a garden project. Based at our St Albans branch, he’s passionate about helping customers find the right turf, stone, or decking and he always delivers it with a smile. He thrives on meeting new people and making sure every visitor feels welcome. Outside of work, Damian keeps busy with a mix of darts league nights, live music gigs, and weekends at the beach with a BBQ and some tunes. A proud Man United supporter, football is in his DNA. Always up for a laugh, always happy to help. That’s Damian.

With 25 years behind the wheel, Dan brings calm, timing and care to every job, exactly what you want when deliveries need to be on time and spot‑on. He’s even got a rock legend on his drop‑list, having once delivered to Liam Gallagher (no pressure there). A lifelong sports fan, Dan follows boxing and backs QPR through thick and thin. Weekends are family first: a session at the gym, then sideline duty for his son’s football matches. He’s part coach, part cheerleader, and definitely the loudest voice of encouragement. Ask Dan what he’s proudest of, and he won’t hesitate: his children. It’s the same pride he brings to the job, professional, reliable, and personable, making sure customers get what they need, where and when they need it. Suppose you catch him between drops, talk sports. If you need something delivered right, talk to Dan.

Daria joined the team at the start of June and quickly became an integral part of our marketing efforts. Working closely alongside Darren, she manages our social media platforms and brings our landscaping materials to life through engaging and informative content. With a keen eye for detail and a passion for planning, Daria thrives on structure and never misses a beat. Her love of a to-do list means every campaign, video edit, and post is delivered with precision and flair. Whether she’s out on-site capturing the latest transformation or behind the scenes editing reels and writing captions, Daria brings creativity, organisation, and a fresh perspective to Team GDT. She’s also probably the only person who can outdo Darren's to-do list, which is saying something.

If there’s a theme to Naomi’s day, it’s curiosity and care. She asks the right questions, checks the details, and makes sure every order is spot‑on and usually with a coffee in hand. Naomi joined GDT for a fresh start with real values and room to grow, and she found exactly that. Off the clock, she’s in the kitchen baking or planning her next trip. 29 countries so far, always aiming to keep the tally ahead of her age. When it’s time to relax, expect sport on the screen: F1, BTCC, rugby or football. Ask what she’s proudest of? Her family. It’s the same energy she brings to work: warm, inquisitive and reliable, making every customer interaction easy and genuine.

Izzy’s day is all about creativity. She’s the one planning, designing and polishing the content that makes GDT shine online. From brainstorming ideas and crafting captions to editing short‑form videos, she loves the process of turning concepts into scroll‑stopping posts. Her passion for creativity started early, winning Best Infographic at college gave her the confidence to pursue marketing. Music is her escape: singing helps her recharge and fuels the artistic streak that shows in her work. Away from the screen, Izzy’s curious and ambitious. She thrives on learning new skills, experimenting with fresh approaches and finding ways to make content better every time. Ask her what drives her? It’s the buzz of creating something that connects with people.

Krishten is the younger brother of our Marketing Manager, Darren, and he's already become a go-to person in the St Albans yard. A natural on the forklift and excellent with customers, he's the kind of team member who makes everything run more smoothly and, yes, he's been mentioned in our Google reviews more than once. Working alongside Calvin and the lads at St Albans, Krishten brings plenty of energy and a fresh perspective to the day-to-day. Whether he's loading up deliveries, managing stock, or chatting with customers, he gets it done with a smile. When he's not on the yard, you'll find him playing football or in the gym. His positivity and easy-going nature make him a great fit for the team and someone the customers genuinely enjoy dealing with.
