Harlington parish council run an allotment area with a vast number of plots available to rent for just £15 a year. When local resident, Francis Mitchell emailed George Davies Turf at the start of 2023 asking for help to turn around an allotment that hadn’t been worked on for five years, they just knew they couldn’t say no.
George Davies said, “It can be incredibly difficult to grow decent produce even for some of the more experienced allotment owners and it’s really important to give your veg the best chance by using top quality soil. Our Premium Horticulture Loam offers optimal growth and so we were happy to provide 1 tonne towards the beds in need of a makeover. Knowing our donation will have long-term benefits in terms of providing fresh produce for the local community supports our sustainability and giving back mission and it was great to receive lots of photos from Francis showing the results from all of their hard work.”
Francis has been using the topsoil on her plot which she visits regularly with her two young children, Theor and Lorna, she said, “The plot was in a terrible state when we got it but with a lot of hard work, we (my family) got it to an amazing stage. Since receiving George Davies Turf’s kind donation, we have grown parsnips, carrots, tomatoes, rhubarb, potatoes, blackberries, green beans and pumpkins and have some great brussels ready for Christmas. My children love to help with digging, growing and watering and it’s a great way for them to learn about where food comes from and to see the difference in taste. They also love the insects and learn about what’s good for the garden and how they all have jobs to do.
The nice thing about it has been sharing out much of what we have grown to friends and neighbours in the village and donating extra plants to other allotment holders.”
Francis’ hard work and GDT’s donation has helped support a lovely community activity. Allotment holders chat and help each other out and share spare produce within the village and even get to show off their efforts at the yearly village show.
Francis hopes that next year, with some more experience, they can grow more in quantity and range which can be shared with even more people.
