Laying The Groundwork Down for Summer | Summer Prep Tips

May 04, 2022      Summer Tips

We’ve been fortunate to have enjoyed some warm weather and bright sunshine already in 2022, but with summer fast approaching, there’s no better time to start laying the groundwork for the perfect lawn.

The secret to any successful gardening and landscaping project is good preparation. Whether creating flower beds, seeding a new lawn or laying fresh turf, it’s essential to give yourself enough time to get the soil ready.

Quality

Start with a soil test

Good preparation starts with a soil test. This will help you understand the pH of your soil, building a picture of the nutrients that may be lacking. Once you know your soil needs, you can amend it accordingly with a soil improver, such as adding organic matter into your garden to improve soil structure and promote healthy root growth.

Quality

Dig or rotovate your soil

The next step is to dig or rotovate your soil. This will help loosen it, making it easier for roots to spread and giving your plants the best chance to thrive. If you have a small garden, you can do this with a spade. However, for larger gardens or lawns, you may need to hire a rotavator.

Rake over the surface

Once you have dug or rotovated your soil, rake over the surface to create a smooth finish. This will also help remove any stones or large clumps of dirt that could impede plant growth.

Quality

Remove any weeds

It’s essential to remove all existing weeds from the area before planting anything new. Not only do they compete with your plants for nutrients, but they can also harbour pests and diseases that could infect your new lawn or flower beds. Use a hoe or spade to dig them up, making sure to get rid of the roots.

Apply a pre-seeding or pre-turfing fertiliser

Apply a pre-seeding or pre-turfing fertiliser to give your new lawn or flower bed the best possible start in life. This will help to encourage strong growth and discourage weed growth.

Quality

Rake and level again

The final step is to rake and level the area one more time. This will help ensure that your lawn or flower bed has a smooth, even surface ready for planting. Once you have finished, all that’s left to do is sit back and admire your handwork – it’s time to get laying!
