With George Davies Turf & Stone, the product is only half the story. The delivery is just as important.
For your compost order, we will provide a nominated dispatch day and a time slot for your delivery. Our friendly drivers will let you know when they’re on route and use lorry-mounted forklift trucks to place your compost bag(s) exactly where you want them (within reason) – gravel drives, long, narrow tracks and rear garden deliveries are not a problem.
Our forklift trucks measure 2.6 metres wide and weigh 2.5 tonnes empty, which we consider when reviewing delivery options. They are also all-terrain trucks and can handle any location (subject to customer agreement). High fences, unfortunately, cause a few problems as we can’t climb over them. But we will always endeavour to find the best solution.
If you would like the bags to be split, so compost is left in a pile or scattered around a particular area, we will accommodate as much as possible, as long as access is good and you have a sharp knife available.
As turf and lawn care specialists, we know that healthy soil is the foundation of every great lawn. Our compost is carefully produced, screened, and blended to meet the needs of landscapers and garden enthusiasts. It’s trusted by landscapers, homeowners, and sports ground professionals for consistent quality and outstanding results.
Using our local knowledge and years of experience, make sure our customers are looked after from the moment they inquire about a product, through to delivery and beyond, with our aftercare service. We treat every job as if it were our own project, and we want to help you as much as possible
Our compost is ordered and delivered in sturdy bulk bags. Simply head to the top of the page and select the number of bulk bags you need. Unsure of the quantity of compost required? Use our handy compost calculator to determine the exact amount based on the measurements of the area you’re turfing or seeding. You can also contact the team for any questions regarding your order.
If you’re ordering natural turf, your compost order will be delivered at the same time. Compost orders purchased without turf will be delivered as a PM delivery unless we have confirmed otherwise. This is to ensure that turf and similar products are sent out on our first deliveries to ensure freshness. Please note that orders for collection from our St Albans or Olney branches require a minimum area of 20 m².
No. If you have a specific location in mind where you’d like us to leave your order, please let us know in the order notes.
We also use What3Words to deliver your order precisely where you want it, or you can even leave a note saying ‘Please leave compost here’ if you’d like your delivery driver to take it somewhere specific.
Compost is a natural soil improver made from decomposed organic matter. Rich in nutrients and beneficial microbes, compost enhances soil health and provides a slow-release source of food for turf and plants. Unlike synthetic products, compost feeds both your lawn and the soil ecosystem, creating a balanced environment where turf can truly thrive.
Compost is composed entirely of decomposed organic matter. This is what makes it highly fertile and nutrient-rich, feeding your turf, plants, and soil all the goodness they need to grow healthily. While topsoil also contains key nutrients, it also consists of natural earth, minerals, and some organic matter, which benefit turf laying, root establishment, and successful grass growth.
When using compost within your flowerbeds or when laying new turf, we recommend 2-3 inches of top-quality compost. Add a layer of compost to the surface of the area and work it into the top layer of soil.
